Kyiv was the main center of glass manufacturing in Kyivan Rus at the beginning of XII c. Glass production shifts from the needs of the church and princely courts to the needs of common people. Ancient glassmakers learned almost all tricks and achievements of civilization in this area. Products of Kyiv glass shops were sold over large areas from Rhine to the Ural Mountains. Kyiv continue to remain a major center of glass production during the following centuries, but also glass production was established in Zvenigorod, Halych, Chernihiv and other cities. Glass beads and vessels from the XI-XII centuries are displayed on the exposition as well as bracelet fragments found during excavations in Zvenyhorod and Halych. Glass beads, known since ancient times, were widely distributed on Kyivan Rus beginning with X century. Colors, forms and ways of decoration increased considerably since that time. It was made in the way of twisting the hot glass on the metal wire. Pay attention please on the diversity in patterns and colors that were used then. Glass bracelets were extremely popular among residents of ancient cities. They were found during all archeological excavation in fortifications from eleventh to thirteenth centuries. Glass bangles were made in the similar way as beads, the heated end of the glass wire twisted around a wooden stick with appropriate diameter. Balsamaries from Roman colonies of I-II cc. are exposed on this shelf. There were many glass shops in the Roman Empire that time. The same situation was in the Roman colonies such as lands of North Black Sea Coast. These balsamaries probably were produced there. According to the tradition, the lamps were lit and balsamary of odorous substances placed around the deceased. Balsamary belonged to the burial inventory of that period, so they were found rarely during the excavations of the Roman colonies of Northern Black Sea.
